The Bismarck was the pride of the Kriegsmarine: a 50,000-tonne battleship with eight 380mm guns and armour belt nearly 13 inches thick. In May 1941, she sank HMS Hood — the Royal Navy's most beloved ship — in under ten minutes, killing all but three of her 1,418 crew. The Royal Navy committed every available ship to hunt her down, eventually sinking the Bismarck just eight days into her only operational mission.
